About the event

The Lake Sebago launch sits on Seven Lakes Drive in Harriman State Park, about 40 minutes from Ridgewood. It’s a simple hand launch on the lake’s southeast shore. Lake Sebago is one of the park’s largest lakes, at roughly 300 acres with about six miles of wooded shoreline. It sits around 770 feet up.

What sunrise looks like here. The launch faces west and northwest across the water, so the sun comes up behind you rather than over the lake. The payoff is the light. The first sun hits the ridges on the far shore and turns them gold and pink while the water is still in shadow. On cool, still mornings, mist often rises off the lake, especially in fall. Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to catch the blue hour and the mist before the light reaches the water.

Paddling at dawn. You need a seasonal Palisades Interstate Park Commission boat permit, and gas motors aren’t allowed. Kayaks and canoes are what you’ll see. The beach is closed for renovations, but the boat launch is still open. Construction has also closed two Victory Trail connections near the northwest corner of the lake, likely into mid-2027.

Parking. The lot is small and fills up on nice weekends. Hikers have found it full by 9:20 AM, which is a non-issue at sunrise. You can also park along Seven Lakes Drive just outside the launch.

After sunrise. An unmarked shore path runs south from the launch, past the old beach to the dam. From there, a loop up Diamond Mountain has views of Pine Meadow Lake and back down over Sebago, about 4 miles.

Good to know. Expect yellow invasive-plant (hydrilla) notices at access points; there’s an ongoing treatment program. In late fall, check the park’s hunting notices, since Harriman has had deer hunting starting in early November, and wear some orange if you’re there in season.
